Perception of undergraduate students on remote learning

Abstract
  • Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a comprehensive shift from physical to remote learning has created a fresh learning environment for students. There are many perceptions from students and their satisfaction towards remote learning. However, there is lack of research on the perception of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) undergraduate students towards remote learning. Thus, this study aims to analyze the perception of UUM undergraduate students towards remote learning and identify the remote learning challenges faced by UUM undergraduate students. The data collected from 300 respondents who are UUM undergraduate students via an online questionnaire survey to have more understanding of university students' perceptions towards remote learning. The findings revealed that 65.3% of the UUM undergraduate students prefer remote learning rather than traditional learning because remote learning is more flexible, communication between students and lecturers is more comfortable, easier online materials accessibility, and the effectiveness of remote learning. Nevertheless, they stated online learning is not easier to develop soft skills such as critical thinking skills, creativity skills, communication skills and others. On the flip side, the challenges faced mainly by them during online learning are the lack of interaction between students and educators, poor internet connection, economic burdens, high volume of coursework, and the lack of concentration as well as the motivation to study.
