Abstract
  • The creation of an animated character was an essential part of producing an animated film, and Monkey King, as a significant character in Chinese animation, played a pivotal role in creating animation. With the advent of the digital age, the shaping and expression of the animated character should adapt to the aesthetic needs of the times. Many Monkey King- related animated films have been created so far, but the aesthetics and typicality of an animated character should be emphasised in the digital age. Therefore, the present study selected classic Monkey King Chinese animation films from three important periods of Chinese animation. A comparative case study of the external expressions and intrinsic values of the three classic animated characters was conducted from the viewpoint of German Hegelian aesthetic theory, thereby establishing the aesthetic research value of animated characterisation. Based on the research result in the present study, the creators of animation might be helped to summarise the typical patterns of characterisation from an aesthetic point of view to express the meaning and connotation of the animated works accurately and also to explore the extension and dissemination of this vital character image in the digital age. The extension and dissemination of this vital character image in the digital age were explored to provide theoretical support for developing China’s animation film industry.
