Bringing back fun and active learning in the Malaysian ESL classrooms

Abstract
  • Many pupils on the east coast perceive that English is a dry subject and that they have lost interest in learning English because the learning environment is dull. Hence, Sparkle.com, an all-in-one website, is developed to function as a teaching and learning tool that aims to promote fun and active learning in Year 4 ESL classrooms. It is to ensure that pupils’ motivation and interest in learning English are sustained and increased. The innovation is developed using Genially and contains a combination of teaching and learning materials, activities and game-based assessments focusing on Module 5 of the Year 4 textbook. A survey was conducted through a questionnaire using Google Form involving 36 Year 4 pupils to measure the effectiveness of Sparkle.com in promoting fun and active learning in ESL classrooms based on four constructs: content, usability, user-friendliness, and appearance. The results demonstrate that the majority of the pupils responded positively to all four constructs, indicating the effectiveness of Sparkle.com. The pupils also showed a high level of interest in using the platform. Overall, the use of Sparkle.com brings positive results in promoting fun and active learning in Malaysia Year 4 ESL classrooms.
