Abstract
  • With the advanced development of virtual reality techniques in the field of education, virtual teaching space based on virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), and other techniques have been practiced and applied in actual teaching. However, there is still a lack of research focusing on the conceptual model of spatial ability in learning environment, and the importance of spatial ability in the immersive learning environment (ILE) is not evident, which will lead to limited concepts related to the spatial ability learners can acquire. Therefore, this study aims to propose an immersive learning environment for cultivating spatial ability based on content analysis and evaluate its effectiveness for spatial ability development. On this basis, an immersive learning environment prototype based on the VR technique is designed and developed. The prototype design is derived from a specific course, which contains related concepts of spatial ability. This study applies the developed prototype to the actual curriculum and carries out experiential spatial ability teaching, finally evaluating the effect of cultivating students' spatial ability. The results can help teachers understand students' mastery of spatial ability; meanwhile, it also provides guidelines and references for college teachers to design and develop spatial ability teaching and learning methods.
