Abstract
  • Green and sustainable development has grown, focusing on decreasing energy consumption and lessening environmental impact. The built environment significantly contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, with buildings responsible for nearly 40% of global energy consumption, including design studios. HEIs increase carbon footprints and high energy costs because of outdated lighting systems and inadequate daylight penetration in the design studios. Daylight energy can be harnessed through passive daylight retrofitting strategies. These strategies modify a building to enhance energy efficiency and improve daylight utilisation. Due to this, it is crucial to investigate suitable passive daylight retrofitting strategies for design studios. This paper aims to identify the passive daylight retrofitting strategies for design studios that meet the energy efficiency criteria to achieve a green index rating. A qualitative method approach was employed in this study. Data was collected through archived document evaluation. The documents used are relevant building standards guidelines, including the Green Building Index for Interior Version 1.3, Malaysia Standard MS1525: 2019 third revision, and the Chartered Institution of Building Service Engineers Lighting Guide 5: Lighting for Education. Content analysis is used to analyse all data collected. The result of this research will be presented in the table as Daylighting Strategy Types Matrik (DSTM). The most frequently used daylighting strategies, as highlighted in DSTM, are Windows, Louvers, Light Shelf, Skylight, and Overhangs. These strategies are categorised as penetration, distribution, protection, and control criteria. Each of the strategies has a unique role in optimising daylighting in the building. In addition, the importance of standardised metrics for illuminance and daylight factor readings in ensuring sustainability and comfort in building design is highlighted when comparing green design data from industry standards. By implementing passive daylighting retrofitting techniques that adhere to these requirements, it is possible to achieve energy savings and obtain green building certifications.
