Abstract
  • Recently, Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) has become an increasingly popular concept worldwide, recognised for its ability to enhance the environment and economy of an area. By making public transport systems more effective and efficient, TOD planning offers several advantages, particularly in preserving the environment and improving the quality of life for future generations. This paper examines the standard TOD planning level at Sungai Buloh MRT Station. To achieve this aim, several objectives have been identified: to determine the criteria and suitability of TOD planning principles for implementation in Malaysia, to identify the standard level of TOD planning at Sungai Buloh MRT Station based on TOD planning standard guidelines, and to establish a TOD standard-level planning system using the TOD Scorecard at Sungai Buloh MRT Station. Methods of execution in the development of the TOD model are divided into three stages: Stage 1: Data collection involves the collection of primary and secondary data throughout the site survey; Stage 2: Analysis of the distribution of land use, including housing, commercial areas, public facilities, and infrastructure, using a Geographic Information System (GIS) combined with the TOD Standard Scorecard by International Transport Development Policy (ITDP), which assesses walkability, cycling, connectivity, transit, mixed-use, compactness, and shifting. This stage also includes an analysis of the mean ranking and level of satisfaction with various service aspects of the Sungai Buloh MRT Station, such as walking distance and accessibility, parking management, urban design, centeredness, road design, site design, and landmarks; Stage 3: Establishment of a TOD standard-level planning system using the TOD Standard Scorecard by ITDP and mean ranking. The results of this research will be presented as a comprehensive evaluation of the current state of TOD planning at Sungai Buloh MRT Station, including detailed analyses and visual representations of the data. The findings reveal that while Sungai Buloh MRT Station largely aligns with TOD principles, there are significant opportunities for improvement, particularly in enhancing mixed-use development and pedestrian connectivity. Satisfaction with accessibility and parking management highlights areas needing attention. The study provides actionable recommendations to refine TOD practices, aiming to bolster the station’s functionality and sustainability.
