Abstract
  • Studies done in recent years have shown that Malaysia’s students have poor intelligibility of the English language. This contributes towards the declining standard of English among Malaysia’s young citizens resulting in an increasing rate of unemployment among university graduates. One of the reasons behind this scenario is that appropriate curricula and good teaching alone are not enough to ensure students’ proficiency in English as students also need to be motivated. This concept paper intends to pave the way in the exploration of the relationship between the components of instrumental motivation: goal, effort and satisfaction and Malaysian students’ intelligibility of English.
