Abstract
  • Adaptive reuse is a strategy that retrofits existing, mostly historical buildings to serve modern purposes while preserving their historical and architectural value. This paper discusses the adaptive reuse project of Sentul Depot in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Denver Union Station in Denver, USA, and how the two projects were able to meet the sustainability requirements in the modern world while at the same time preserving the historical structures. This research employs site visits, observations, and case studies to establish the strategies and results of these adaptive reuse projects. The comparative analysis method was used in determining the differences and similarities of the factors such as history, function, culture, economic value, and future viability. This study identifies that both Sentul Depot and Denver Union Station have preserved the historical architectural features and incorporated new uses, including performance, retail, and hospitality, that enriched cultural and revitalized urban spaces. The research examines the pragmatic aspects of adaptive reuse: the revitalization of the local economy, the activation of the community, and the development of a sustainable city using environmentally friendly materials and energy-saving technologies. This study adds to the body of knowledge on adaptive reuse by identifying the issues of historical conservation in the light of contemporary demands. It offers a reference point for future projects that aim at reclaiming heritage structures while at the same time considering the social, economic, and environmental factors. The findings derived from this research can help the stakeholders in the formulation of adaptive reuse policies that will enhance the protection of the heritage resources while promoting the development of the urban environment at the same time.
