Abstract
This study explores how short-video content produced by elderly TikTok celebrities in China functions as a symbolic resource in followers’ self-concept and narrative identity construction. Drawing on self-concept theory and narrative identity theory, the research adopts a theory-informed qualitative design using reflexive thematic analysis. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten followers of elderly TikTok influencers. The findings identify four interrelated themes: digital ageing as a reflective mirror, aspirational possible selves, rewriting internalized age narratives, and identity continuity across the life course. Rather than shaping behavioral outcomes, elderly digital representations encourage interpretive self-reflection and narrative reconsideration. The study contributes qualitative insight into the applicability of identity theories within contemporary digital ageing contexts and offers culturally grounded understanding of how short-video platforms shape age-related self-interpretation in China.
