Abstract
  • A risk management course offers a systematic solution to train engineering student’s critical and creative thinking in identifying, assessing and controlling project risks to minimize the impact on both project and organization. Most of the past literature focused on the importance of risk management implementation in the construction industry, but little attention has been given to the integration of risk management course in engineering education towards students’ career readiness and advancement. The objective of this paper is to study the importance of knowledge offered in risk management course at the post-graduate level based on perceptions of fifty-eight (58) students who enrolled in risk management course. This study focuses on one of the course outcomes, which is mapped directly to a program outcome in the course. This course outcome is designed for the students to perform effectively their managerial and entrepreneurship skills towards career advancement through the application of risk management concept and appropriate techniques to the real problem of interests with regards to the system of moral rules or ethics in the workplace. Most of the respondents’ companies have established risk management procedures, but less than half are involved directly in managing risks in construction projects. The findings indicated that students demonstrated positive perceptions and feedback on their knowledge and understanding of the risk management concepts and principles. The findings show that the students are aware of the risks which are inherent in the construction industry that they are currently involved. Thus, a risk management course is one of the important courses that need to be integrated into an advanced engineering education framework to prepare the students to be industry ready. This study is important from continual quality improvement (CQI) perspective on risk management knowledge in engineering tertiary education.
