Abstract
  • The Islamic leadership emerges and increases interest in recent years from academia and practitioners. The pressure on environmental improvement has increased the needs for environmental and/green leadership subsequently leading to organizational growth and sustained competitiveness. Thus Islamic leadership is highly recognized for enhancing sustainability practices and development. However, the Islamic leadership in promoting the sustainable practices within organizations has yet to be explored and well defined so far. To address this gap, the present study provides a comprehensive review. The purpose of this paper is threefold: to review both, the theory and style of conventional and Islamic leadership; to investigate the relationship between the conventional and Islamic leadership styles pertinent to sustainability practices; and to provide a conceptual model on Islamic leadership for sustainable practices and development. A conceptual approach, developed from reviews within the research domain of leadership, green leadership and sustainability from conventional and Islamic perspectives. Based on the in-depth reviews with purposively-selected themes, the paper reveals the novel findings on the Islamic leadership in enhancing the sustainable practices within organizations. Despite many leadership studies, the paper presents the mechanism for the enhancement of sustainable practices through Islamic leadership as a booster of it. The study not only contributes to the knowledge and literature of leadership, Islamic leadership, organizational and sustainability but also enriches understanding of the Islamic leadership theories and styles.
