Abstract
  • Creative process is the important part of pre-production that included concept, idea, theme and final design. This study investigates how the local folklore been showed as part of the creative process that reflect the traditional culture of Malay community. It examines the factor of creative process that interact with the local culture. The process of design is based on the adoption character of folklore character such as Mat Jenin, Nakhoda Ragam, Pak Belalang, Raja Bersiong, Mak Deruma, Bawang Putih and Bawang Merah in the 3D animated film “Upin and Ipin Lone Gibbon Kris”. The interpretation involves the traditional narrative to identify the symbolism and the factors that used to reflect the culture. Thus, this study employed the qualitative method which is semi-structured interview among the crew production to analyse the factors that use in their creative process. Moreover, it also involves observation through the concept art book to analyse the symbolism that influence in creative process. The data were analysed using the document and thematic analysis to find the correlation between the factor of creative process in designing a costume that influences by the identity culture and interpretation. The impact of this study can be a guidance for the animation industry to create more significant design based on the reference from the culture.
