Abstract
Every child, including those with disabilities, deserves the opportunity to engage in play as a vital part of their development. Unfortunately, playgrounds in Malaysia often fall short in accommodating the needs of children with disabilities, resulting in significant barriers that limit their participation. These playgrounds frequently lack the necessary provisions, making them both inaccessible and unsafe. To address these issues, this study aimed to develop a design layout principle for inclusive playgrounds tailored to the needs of children with disabilities. The research utilized qualitative methods, specifically Focus Group Discussions (FGD) with 15 participants, including local authorities, playground providers, industry players, and caregivers. Purposive sampling was employed to ensure that insights were gathered from individuals with substantial experience in playground design and use, particularly regarding inclusivity. The FGDs led to the proposal of twelve key criteria that should be considered by local authorities and playground providers when planning and providing inclusive playground facilities. These criteria encompass aspects such as location, layout, access, signage, wayfinding, play equipment, play experience, pathways, surfacing, safety, facilities, and landscape features. The layout principles developed through this research is to ensure that children with disabilities can safely and joyfully exercise their right to play. It serves as a guide for local authorities and playground providers in creating inclusive playgrounds that welcome all children, fostering environments where they can play together in their communities.
