Abstract
  • Ceramic products, as a form of cultural heritage, can be traced back to the origins of human society and have evolved alongside the progress of human civilization. Jingdezhen, China, renowned as the “Porcelain Capital,” boasts a long and distinguished history of ceramic production. Since the 13th century, it has served as a global hub for porcelain manufacturing, with its products exported worldwide. However, the rapid pace of modernization and globalization presents both opportunities and unprecedented challenges to the sustainable innovation and marketability of Jingdezhen's traditional ceramic products. This study employs qualitative research methods to examine these challenges, focusing on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Jingdezhen. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed thematically to identify key factors constraining sustainable innovation and market growth. The analysis revealed five critical challenges: (1) balancing heritage preservation with innovation, (2) addressing market demand and increasing competition, (3) managing production costs and resource efficiency, (4) overcoming shortages in skilled human resources and management experience, and (5) fostering originality and cultural adaptation. Based on these findings, the study proposes a conceptual framework to guide sustainable innovation and enhance the marketability of traditional ceramic products in Jingdezhen. The research helps explain how traditional craft industries can integrate cultural heritage values with modern design and business strategies to achieve long-term sustainability in the global market.
