Abstract
  • This research studied the factors in creating a sustainable gastronomic attraction model for the Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras World Heritage Site to strengthen its prospect as one of the leading tourist destinations in the Philippines. This research was anchored on four factors specifically on local cuisine attraction (Phase 1), marketing strategies (Phase 2), local economic benefits (Phase 3) and tourism government regulations (Phase 4). Phases 1 and 3 of the study utilized quantitative research while Phases 2 and 4 employed qualitative research. Phase 1 of the study on local cuisine attraction was administered to 343 respondents who were chosen through purposive sampling. The result of the study showed that majority of tourists were much willing to eat local exotic food items and displayed traits of Food Neophilia. The result further showed that tourists were motivated to consume local cuisine because of exciting and authentic experience. Phase 2 of the study on marketing strategies at the Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras revealed that the Local Government Units do not have an existing tourism marketing plan and local cuisine attractions were promoted through brochures, tourism expositions, word of mouth and social media specifically Facebook. Phase 3 of the study on local economic benefits bared that majority of the local food-serving Micro, Small and Medium-Scale Enterprise operators spend between USD 17.26 - USD 25.86 daily for the preparation of local cuisine and earn a daily profit between USD 8.64 – USD 17.24. Phase 4 of the study on government tourism regulations revealed that Local Government Unit’s capability to grant accreditation to tourism facilities is superseded by the Philippine Department of Tourism.
